Microsoft 365 backup tools compared: Veeam, AvePoint, Datto, and Microsoft 365 Backup

Microsoft 365 Backup is Microsoft’s own pay-as-you-go backup for Exchange, OneDrive, and SharePoint at $0.15 per GB per month. Veeam Data Cloud, AvePoint Cloud Backup, and Datto SaaS Protection are third-party SaaS backups that also cover Teams and keep copies outside Microsoft 365; Veeam publishes per-user prices, AvePoint and Datto quote on request. Accred Protect is in development, backs up only Exchange mail and OneDrive, and is not available yet.

How to read this comparison

Accred Protect is in development and not available to customers, so it is listed for scope only. Competitor facts come from each vendor’s public pages and Microsoft Learn, checked on October 27, 2026; prices change and resellers set their own, so confirm them with the vendor.

At a glance

How restore differs

  • Microsoft 365 Backup restores OneDrive and SharePoint by rolling back a whole account or site, or by restoring file versions to the same or a new location. Exchange items restore to the same or a new folder in the user’s own mailbox.
  • Veeam Backup for Microsoft 365, the self-hosted edition, documents point-in-time restore to the original or a new location and export of mail to PST.
  • AvePoint documents granular restore of files, versions, permissions, and settings, out-of-place restore to another site or mailbox, end-user self-restore, and export jobs.
  • Datto documents point-in-time, non-destructive restore, restore from one user account into another, and export, including PST.
  • Accred Protect’s current build restores selected mail or files to the original user or another user in the same tenant, into a new folder, without overwriting anything. It has no export yet. See Accred Protect for details.

Where the backup lives

  • Microsoft 365 Backup keeps data inside the Microsoft 365 service boundary in your tenant’s geography.
  • Veeam Data Cloud stores data in an Azure region you choose. The self-hosted Veeam Backup for Microsoft 365 writes to storage you run, on premises or in cloud object storage.
  • AvePoint uses its own cloud storage by default and supports bringing your own storage.
  • Datto stores backups in Kaseya’s private cloud.
  • Accred Protect stores backup content in Cloudflare R2, encrypted at rest. Choosing a storage region is planned, not built.

For managed service providers

  • Veeam Data Cloud is in Veeam’s service-provider rental program with a multi-tenant interface; Veeam notes that prices vary by service provider.
  • AvePoint sells to MSPs through AvePoint Elements, a multi-tenant management platform with pooled licensing.
  • Datto SaaS Protection is sold through Kaseya partners and manages client backups from one partner portal.
  • Microsoft 365 Backup is set up per tenant by that tenant’s administrators; Microsoft Learn does not describe a multi-tenant partner console for it.

Which to choose

  • Choose Microsoft 365 Backup when you want fast, frequent recovery points for Exchange, OneDrive, and SharePoint without a third party, and per-GB billing suits your data size.
  • Choose Veeam when you want published per-user pricing, long default retention, or the option to run the backup on your own infrastructure.
  • Choose AvePoint when you need the widest workload list, including Teams chat and Power Platform, or bring-your-own storage.
  • Choose Datto when you already buy from Kaseya and want cross-user restore and PST export in one partner portal.
  • Accred Protect is not a choice yet. It is in development and covers only Exchange mail and OneDrive.
