Microsoft Copilot readiness
Checked October 27, 2026 by Accred Consulting
Copilot can find anything a user already has permission to see, so readiness starts with oversharing: sites and files open to far more people than need them. Microsoft’s own order is to find and fix oversharing first, using temporary controls such as Restricted Content Discovery while you do. Accred Assess turns that work, plus the policy and ownership decisions around it, into a readiness score and a fix plan. It is free to start and gives advisory guidance, not certification.
Why oversharing comes first
- Microsoft says Copilot and agents respect existing permissions, sharing settings, and policies, so anything overshared today is reachable through Copilot.
- Microsoft’s guidance for a secure data foundation puts “remediate oversharing” first, starting with the SharePoint Advanced Management content assessment that finds sites with oversized audiences, broken inheritance, and inappropriate sharing.
- Restricted Content Discovery can keep selected SharePoint sites out of Copilot results while you fix permissions. Microsoft describes it as temporary, and it does not change permissions.
- SharePoint Advanced Management is included with Copilot licenses, and Restricted Content Discovery needs a Copilot license.
What Accred Assess adds
- A governance plan of 67 implementation controls for Microsoft 365, Copilot, Claude, and ChatGPT, with priorities, owners, notes, and evidence.
- Read-only Microsoft discovery that shows what your tenant has, when your access and licensing allow. What it observes never changes the score.
- A readiness score from your team’s recorded decisions, a prioritized fix plan, and a shareable advisory report.
- Framework views, including the NIST AI RMF, that map the same decisions to each framework’s requirements.
Assess does not change tenant settings and does not replace SharePoint Advanced Management or Microsoft Purview. For how the score is calculated, see how an AI governance readiness score works.
Pricing
The free assessment starts without an account and covers the priority controls. The expanded assessment, with all 67 controls, framework alignment, and the full report, is $99 one-time per organization.
If you want it done for you
Accred Consulting’s Copilot deployment service handles permissions cleanup, rollout, and adoption. For the oversharing steps, read how to stop SharePoint oversharing before Copilot.
Questions
What is a Copilot readiness assessment?
A review of whether your data, permissions, policies, and ownership are ready for Copilot, ending in a list of gaps to fix. With Accred Assess, the score comes from your team’s recorded decisions on governance controls.
Is there a free Copilot readiness assessment?
Yes. Accred Assess starts free, without an account, on the priority controls. The expanded assessment is $99 one-time per organization.
Does Copilot ignore permissions?
No. Microsoft says Copilot respects existing permissions, sharing settings, and policies. That is why overshared content is the main risk: Copilot can surface whatever a user can already open.
Does Accred Assess fix oversharing?
No. Assess is read-only and advisory. It records the gaps and builds a fix plan; your administrators, or Accred Consulting, make the changes in Microsoft 365.
